New Delhi [India], August 24 : A woman constable of the Delhi Police Metro Unit saved the life of a minor girl who allegedly attempted to jump onto the metro tracks at Hauz Khas Metro station, police said on Monday.
The incident took place on Saturday when woman constable (W/CT) Nikita, No. 381/Metro, was patrolling at Hauz Khas Metro station and noticed a minor girl, aged around 16-17 years, attempting to move towards the metro track with an apparent intention to end her life.
Showing alertness and presence of mind, the woman constable immediately intervened and restrained the girl, preventing her from jumping onto the track, police said.
Despite the girl repeatedly attempting to move towards the track, Nikita remained alert and ensured her safety. She subsequently informed the police station about the incident, following which the matter was entrusted to ASI Raj Kumar for necessary action.
With the assistance of other police personnel, the girl was taken to the Yellow Line Station Control Room.
Initially reluctant to disclose details about herself, the minor was subsequently reassured by W/CT, who interacted with her patiently and sensitively. Police were able to obtain essential information and contact her father, who later reached the station control room.
The girl was identified as a 16-year-old resident of R K Puram's Sector 5 area in Delhi.
During the inquiry, police learnt that the minor had been undergoing treatment for a mental health-related condition at RML Hospital for around one year and had allegedly attempted to harm herself in the past.
After completion of the necessary inquiry and formalities, the girl was safely handed over to her father for her care and protection.
Delhi Police said the timely intervention and compassionate handling by W/CT Nikita prevented a potentially tragic incident and facilitated the safe reunification of the minor with her family.
