
"Investigation underway in smuggling of phone into the prison": Kannur Police Commissioner

Kannur (Kerala) [India], May 5 : Kannur City Police Commissioner, P Nidhin Raj, said an investigation is currently underway following the seizure of mobile phones from Kannur Central Jail. He confirmed that some information about the smuggling of phones into the prison has been received.
As per the officials, jail staff discovered the phones during an inspection. Two smartphones were hidden behind the first cell in the tenth block. Five phones have been seized from the prison in the past week.
The commissioner stated that phones have been thrown into the prison from outside in some cases. He also said that thorough checks are conducted on inmates when they go to or return from court.
Speaking to the mediapersons, Kannur City Police Commissioner, IPS, Nidhin Raj said, "There have been several incidents involving the seizure of electronic devices, including mobile phones. The town police have registered cases related to this, and while some possibilities have been ruled out, others are still being investigated. We've filed two cases last month at the Kannur Town Police Station."
The Police Commissioner assured that the police and prison authorities are working together on the case. Police are also examining the electronic devices for forensic evidence.
"These cases involve people trying to smuggle mobile phones, especially when going to or returning from court. We are checking how these devices are brought in and who is involved. The investigation is ongoing, and we're following several leads. Right now, both the police and prison authorities are working together on this. Many such cases have come to light through reports from the prison superintendent. Each case is different, and we are examining the electronic devices for forensic evidence. Once the full investigation is done, we will be able to share more details," Raj said.
