LS speaker Birla calls for UN reforms, says "Swift global reforms a necessity"

New Delhi [India], November 19 : Stressing the need for UN reforms, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, on Wednesday, underscored the importance of re-evaluating the United Nations' current structure in light of a rapidly changing global landscape.
He highlighted the need for essential reforms to address contemporary challenges. Birla observed that in a world grappling with critical issues-including war, terrorism, climate crises, and digital threats-dialogue, cooperation, and timely global reforms have become indispensable.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla made these remarks while delivering the inaugural session of the 26th International Conference of Chief Justices of the World on Wednesday.
Birla highlighted India's ancient philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam and the principles of peace, harmony, and equity enshrined in the Constitution as the foundation of the country's global commitment.
Citing India's active role in UN peacekeeping missions, its contribution of over 300,000 peacekeeping troops, and the vaccine assistance extended to more than 150 countries during the COVID-19 pandemic, he affirmed that India has consistently acted with a deep sense of responsible global cooperation.
Lok Sabha Speaker hoped that the conference, focused on emerging challenges before the judiciary, such as environmental justice, sustainable development, digital security, and the ethical use of artificial intelligence further strengthen global peace, justice, and stability.
Sudhanshu Trivedi, MP, also remained present on the occasion.
