New Delhi [India], April 2 : The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the District Task Force, Ghaziabad, to conduct an on-site inspection and submit a detailed report on alleged illegal mining, while also calling upon the Commissioner of Police to file a fresh affidavit on the progress of the investigation, including identification of persons involved and the JCB used in the activity.
The Principal Bench of the National Green Tribunal, while hearing a plea alleging illegal mining in Ghaziabad, has issued a series of directions to ensure factual verification and accountability in the matter.
The Tribunal directed the District Task Force to visit the mining site and verify whether illegal mining has been carried out by the project proponent or any other person in the area.
It has also been asked to determine how the mining pit was created, its exact dimensions, and the remedial measures required. The report is to be filed by the District Magistrate, Ghaziabad before the next hearing.
Further, expressing concern over the investigation conducted so far, the Tribunal directed the Commissioner of Police, Ghaziabad to file an additional affidavit detailing the progress of the probe, including particulars of the persons involved and the owner and driver of the JCB allegedly used in illegal mining.
The Tribunal also ordered issuance of summons to the applicant Bittu and a local resident Mohsin, whose video recordings were relied upon, for recording their statements to verify the authenticity of the evidence submitted.
The bench noted that despite earlier opportunities, several respondents had failed to file replies and granted them a final opportunity to do so before the next date of hearing. Additionally, officials including the District Mining Officer and Additional District Magistrate, who appeared before the Tribunal, have been directed to remain present with relevant records on the next date.
The case pertains to allegations of illegal mining in violation of environmental norms. The Tribunal had earlier restrained mining activities at the site, an order which was upheld after the Supreme Court declined to interfere. The matter is now listed for further hearing on April 9, 2026.
