New Delhi [India], October 6 : The attack on Chief Justice of India (CJI) B R Gavai inside the Supreme Court premises on Monday has triggered widespread condemnation across the political spectrum, with leaders from various parties calling it an "attack on the judiciary" and "constitution"
The incident, in which a lawyer allegedly attempted to throw a shoe at the CJI, has raised serious questions over security within the apex court and sparked a chorus of solidarity with the Chief Justice.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said the incident was "an assault on the dignity of our judiciary and the spirit of our Constitution."
"Such hatred has no place in our nation and must be condemned," he said in a post on X.
His sister and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra termed the attempt "shameful, unfortunate, and alarming."
"The attempt to attack the Honorable Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is extremely shameful, unfortunate, and alarming. This is not just an attack on the Chief Justice of the country, but on our Constitution, the entire judicial system, and the rule of law," she wrote.
"The Honorable Chief Justice, through their hard work, dedication, and competence, has broken all societal barriers to achieve the highest judicial position. Such an attack on them is fatal to both the judiciary and democracy. No amount of condemnation for this is enough," she added further.
Congress leader Supriya Shrinate said, "This is beyond imagination that a crazy lawyer will come to the Apex Court, raise slogans and attempt to hurl something at the Chief Justice of India. It is his bigheartedness that he said the proceedings should continue."
"But it is a matter of concern for all of us...Is this happening because he comes from a Dalit community? A Dalit was beaten to death in Raebareli and a Dalit CJI is attacked here...I think this is very concerning; the more it is criticised, the less it is. Such a person should be punished," she added.

From Karnataka, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also condemned the act, demanding strict action.
"I strongly condemn the incident in which a lawyer attempted to throw a shoe at the Hon'ble Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice B.R. Gavai. Immediate legal action must be taken against the unruly lawyer who sought to insult both the Chief Justice and the judiciary," he said on X.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin called the incident "shameful" and said it was "an attack on the highest judicial office of our democracy and deserves the strongest condemnation."
"The manner in which the Hon'ble CJI responded with grace, calm and magnanimity shows the strength of the institution, but that cannot make us take the incident lightly. The reason revealed by the attacker for his act shows how deeply the oppressive and hierarchical mindset still lingers in our society," it added.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan linked the incident to what he described as a climate of 'growing intolerance'.
Strongly condemn the attempted attack on Chief Justice B R Gavai in the Supreme Court. This alarming incident is a reflection of the hatred spread by the Sangh Parivar. To dismiss it as an individual act is to ignore the growing climate of intolerance. When communal fanaticism dares to target even the Chief Justice of India, it exposes the grave danger of this divisive and venomous politics that must be confronted without hesitation," Vijayan said on X.
The alleged attempt took place during court proceedings, and security personnel reportedly intervened swiftly. The Supreme Court administration is expected to issue an official statement after reviewing the security lapse.
Apart from this, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has issued a firm resolution condemning the conduct of the advocate who disrupted proceedings in the courtroom of the Chief Justice of India.
The Association described the act as "reprehensible" and expressed deep shock and dismay over what it called a serious breach of courtroom decorum and professional ethics. In its statement, the SCBA asserted that the advocate's behaviour was not only inappropriate for an officer of the Court but also posed a direct challenge to the independence of the judiciary.
It emphasised that such actions erode public trust in the justice system and threaten the foundational respect that binds the Bench and the Bar.
