Pune (Maharashtra) [India], August 13 : In a Savarkar defamation case against Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, his lawyer Milind Pawar on Wednesday said that he will withdraw the plea claiming 'threat to life' to the Leader of Opposition.
This comes after Rahul Gandhi raised "strong exception" to the contents of the application filed by his lawyer, Pawar, who told a Pune court that there was a "threat" to the Congress leader's life from the followers of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.
Pawar had filed the previous application regarding an alleged threat to Gandhi's life without consulting the Leader of Opposition (LoP).
The lawyer is representing Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case filed by Satyaki Savarkar, the grandnephew of freedom fighter Savarkar.
Speaking to ANI, lawyer Milind Pawar said he filed the "threat" plea as Satyaki Savarkar is the son of Himani Savarkar, who was the daughter of Gopal Godse, one of the accused in the Mahatma Gandhi assassination case.
"The lineage of the complainant's mother: Nathuram Godse and Gopal Godse were two brothers accused in the Mahatma Gandhi assassination case along with Savarkar. Daughter of Gopal Godse is Himani Savarkar, who is the mother of the complainant," Pawar said.
He added, "For the last 15 days, Rahul Gandhi has raised his voice against the Election Commission, which is vote theft, and some people are unhappy with Rahul Gandhi over this. This fact should come on record before the court, and on that basis, I have filed this application. Two MPs have already threatened Rahul Gandhi. One, Ravneet Singh Bittu, publicly called Rahul Gandhi the number one terrorist of the country. BJP leader Tarvinder Singh Marwah has threatened that Rahul Gandhi that you will also meet the same fate as your grandmother."
However, Pawar later issued a press statement, informing that his client (Rahul Gandhi) has taken "strong exception to the filing of the plea dated August 13 and has expressed his agreement with the contents."
"I shall file a formal application tomorrow for withdrawal of the said Pursis before the court," Pawar said in a statement.
As this happened, Congress leaders Surpriya Shrinate and Pawan Khera confirmed that the application filed by lawyer Milind Pawar claiming an alleged threat to Rahul Gandhi's life was filed without obtaining the latter's consent.
