Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 4 : Former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa targeted the Congress government in the state after a stampede broke out outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium during the RCB IPL winning celebrations.
In a post on X, Yediyurappa accused the Karnataka government, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, of failing to make adequate arrangements for the celebrations.
He expressed great "sadness and dismay" over the incident.
"During the celebration of the victory of the RCB team after winning the IPL, the shocking reports that more than 10 fans have died and many others have been injured in a stampede in Bengaluru have caused great sadness and dismay. Words cannot express the grief of the families of the fans who lost their lives in the tragedy. I request people to please exercise restraint and prioritise safety. I pray that the injured recover soon," he said.
The former Karnataka CM held the state government responsible for the tragedy and said that it could have been prevented by taking precautions.
"It is apparent that the state government has completely failed to make adequate arrangements and necessary arrangements. The failure of such an incompetent and irresponsible state government has cast a shadow over the celebrations. Even though lakhs of fans were likely to attend, if they could not make arrangements, why did they allow the event? This incompetent government must be held responsible for the tragedy that could have been prevented by taking precautions. First, I demand that the police immediately take all necessary measures for the safety of the people," BS Yediyurappa said.
Stampede erupted during the RCB's historic IPL 2025 title win celebration at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.
BJP MP Tejasvi Surya also slammed the Karnataka government and said that the celebrations turned out to be "so fatal."
"Absolutely gutted by the tragic reports coming in from Chinnaswamy. What should have been a celebration of joy & loyalty turned out to be so fatal. While the state government & leadership were busy hogging their undeserving share of limelight in RCB's victory with the CM himself making an open invitation for the celebration, no arrangements were made on the ground," Surya said on X.
"Despite being aware of the situation from last night, the government failed to plan this out & took bizarre last minute decisions. Steps must be taken immediately to compensate the victims & hold the concerned accountable. This is not what the people of Bengaluru & @RCBTweets deserved," the BJP MP said.
The tragic event has now cast a shadow over RCB's much-celebrated IPL win, where they defeated Punjab Kings (PBKS), ending RCB's long wait for a maiden title as they won the match by six runs at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday.
