Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 28 : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday stepped up pressure on the ruling Trinamool Congress-led West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the alleged gangrape of a female student at South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata on June 25 evening.
BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul demanded the resignation of the TMC supremo hours after the Kolata police arrested the guard of the College where the alleged incident took place.
On the fourth arrest in the Kolkata alleged gangrape case, Paul told ANI, "...It is high time now...Mamata Banerjee should resign. We want security for women..."
The BJP MLA also expressed dissatisfaction over the handling of the case and alleged negligence by the college's authorities.
"We do not have anything to speak on it because arrests are made, minor sections are invoked, and when people forget about the case, the accused are released...This is what has been happening...But it is good that in this case the victim has not been murdered. We are with her...Where was the college authority when this (crime) happened? Where was the governing body? Where was the security?"
She further attacked Mamata Banerjee, "Mamata Banerjee will have to answer...She was brutally assaulted by the three accused...It is high time now...Mamata Banerjee should resign. We want security for women. Get elections done at every student union and have principals. This college has no principal, and the acting vice principal is very close to the TMC..."
Meanwhile, in a major development in the case, Kolkata Police on Saturday arrested the guard of the South Calcutta Law College, where a female student was allegedly gang-raped.
Kolkata police said, "Guard of the Law College, Pinaki Banerjee (55) has also been arrested in the case."
A female student was allegedly gang-raped inside the South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata's Kasba on Wednesday.
Earlier, the police had arrested three accused within 24 hours. The three accused, named as Monojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), were former students or staff members of the same law college.
According to the police, the accused named in the FIR will be produced before the ACJM of Alipore, South 24 Parganas, with a prayer to remand them to Police Custody for a proper investigation into the case.
