"We stand united in this ideological battle": Rahul Gandhi hails nomination of Sudershan Reddy for VP elections

New Delhi [India], August 19 : Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday extended his greetings to retired Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy, who has been nominated as the joint opposition candidate for the upcoming Vice Presidential elections.
"I warmly congratulate B Sudershan Reddy Garu on being nominated as the joint opposition candidate for the Vice President of India. A distinguished jurist and champion of justice, he represents the spirit of our Constitution - safeguarding people's rights, equality and our Democracy. We stand united in this ideological battle and wish him all the very best," Gandhi posted on X.
Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday asserted that the collective decision of all opposition parties to nominate retired Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy for the Vice President elections was a huge achievement of democracy.
The Congress chief said that the opposition stands united against injustice, particularly when democracy and the constitution are under threat.
"All opposition parties have nominated B Sudershan Reddy garu as their joint candidate for the position of the Vice President of India. I am glad that all opposition parties are ready to fight collectively. This is a huge achievement of democracy. Because the opposition stands united against injustice whenever democracy and the constitution are under threat," Kharge said while addressing a press conference here.
The opposition's INDIA bloc on Tuesday announced former Supreme Court judge Justice B Sudershan Reddy as its candidate for the upcoming Vice-Presidential election, terming the contest an "ideological fight" against the NDA.
The opposition leaders said their choice of candidate is meant to defend constitutional values.
The announcement also received backing from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Earlier in the day, Kharge said Reddy would file his nomination on August 21.
Justice Reddy, who served as Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court before being elevated to the Supreme Court in 2007, retired in July 2011. He will contest against the NDA nominee CP Radhakrishnan.
The Vice-Presidential election is scheduled for September 9, with counting on the same day.
