London [UK], July 6 : Defending champion and world number one Jannik Sinner continued his fine run at the ongoing Wimbledon competition, marching into quarterfinals on Sunday night.
Sinner marched past Japanese qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki 6-3, 7-6(0), 6-3 to book his quarter-final spot at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament for fifth time, as per ATP's official website.
Since being pushed to a five-set epic by Miomir Kecmanovic in his opening round clash, Sinner has been on a roll, producing three straight-set wins.
"The first time we played against each other, so I did not know exactly what to expect," Sinner said after the match.
"I tried to handle the situation slightly better than him, which I've done. But he is an incredible player. Coming from qualies and playing such a high level for such a long time. It's amazing and I wish him only the best. He should be proud of himself and of course his whole team," he added.
Facing the Japanese for the first time, the four-time Grand Slammer fended off a break point, to hold serve in second game of the match and got two breaks of his own during the first set win. After being level 4-4 in the second set, Sinner produced a magnificent show at the tiebreak and continued his dominance till third set towards a two hour and 25 minute win.
Sinner fired a total of 44 winners and saved all five break points as he dealt with his opponent's crafty game on grass. He will play Jan-Lennard Struff in the quarterfinals.
"Very tricky, especially on this surface," Sinner said on being asked about the 5-foot-9 Mochizuki's game.
"His game suits it very well because he is very low. But all things considered, I tried to stay a bit more aggressive. I had some chances in the second set, couldn't use them, but still I'm very happy about today's performance. I try to step up every day and be a little bit better, so very happy about today," signed off Sinner.
