Gandhinagar (Gujarat), May 21 ANI: Gujarat’s Asiatic lion population has increased significantly to 891 from 674 in June 2020, announced Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on May 21. The recent census, conducted over May 10-13, involved 3,000+ personnel and covered 35,000 sq km across 58 talukas in 11 districts including Junagadh and Gir Somnath. Using advanced technology like camera traps, high-res cameras, radio collars, and the “direct beat verification” method, forest officials ensured highly accurate data collection on lion location, movement, age, sex, and physical features. Asiatic lions, found only in Gir National Park and nearby areas, benefit from Gujarat’s dedicated conservation efforts under ‘Project Lion’. PM Narendra Modi praised the achievement on platform X, highlighting the success of Gujarat’s long-term wildlife protection initiatives. Lion census is done every five years
