China has failed to reciprocate Tibet’s ‘Middle Way’ approach: Lobsang Sangay

May 27, 2026

Former Tibetan Prime Minister-in-Exile Lobsang Sangay said the Tibetan government-in-exile continues to follow the “Middle Way” approach envisioned by Dalai Lama, which seeks genuine autonomy for Tibet within China rather than complete independence. He explained that the policy is rooted in Buddhist philosophy, dialogue, and political practicality, considering the international agreements many countries have with China regarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Sangay stated that the approach was designed as a compromise aimed at peaceful coexistence, where Tibetans would accept autonomy under China provided there was no repression or discrimination against the Tibetan people. However, he alleged that the Chinese government has failed to respond positively to these efforts and accused Beijing of pursuing an expansionist agenda.
