Golden Temple goes green to tackle pollution

Amritsar (Punjab), April 03: A plantation drive has been carried out at the holiest shrine of Sikhism, the Golden temple to maintain greenery in the area and keep a check on pollution. Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the apex body of the Sikh shrine, planted flower pots and plants on the terrace of buildings in the shrine complex. A vertical garden with around 35,000 plants in the complex was also setup to make the environment cleaner and prevent pollutants from causing any harm to the shrine. Devotees visiting the holy shrine were pleased to see the greenery and they appreciated the environment friendly steps taken by the authorities to add to the beauty of the place. The Golden temple attracts millions of devotees and tourists every year however, the increasing level of air pollution had become a threat to the gold plated temple and thus, this step has been taken to tackle the growing menace.
