Gujarat explores genomics to unlock sporting potential

Oct 23, 2026

Gujarat is embracing sports genomics and scientific assessments to identify athletic potential and improve performance. At the Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre (GBRC) in Gandhinagar, athletes undergo genomic, physiological and health-related assessments to understand their strengths, recovery and injury risks. The initiative aims to analyse around 2,000 athlete samples annually, reaching nearly 10,000 samples over five years. The findings can help provide personalised guidance on training, nutrition and injury recovery. Initially involving tennis players, the programme is expected to expand to disciplines such as athletics, archery, fencing, judo and shooting. With the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the Olympics in focus, Gujarat aims to strengthen athlete development through science and build a pipeline of future champions.
