Gujarat steps up sickle cell care in tribal communities

Gujarat is strengthening sickle cell care in tribal communities by providing free treatment, screening and financial assistance. Over the past four years, around 14,925 patients have received more than ₹14 crores for treatment, medicines and blood transfusions. Tribal health centres provide regular screening, medicines and free care, helping patients access timely diagnosis and continued treatment. Doctors say timely medical care can help manage symptoms such as fatigue, nausea and body pain. Patients are also advised to maintain a nutritious diet. Monthly financial assistance from the government helps families meet treatment and nutritional expenses, reducing the long-term financial burden of the disease. The initiative also focuses on awareness, early diagnosis and regular monitoring, making sickle cell care more accessible, particularly for patients from tribal communities.
