Gujarat’s Alang Leads Green Growth as India Becomes Largest Ship Recycling Nation

India has become the world's largest ship recycling nation, achieving its Maritime India Vision 2030 target five years ahead of schedule. Gujarat's Alang Ship Recycling Yard has played a key role, helping India secure a 35.4% global market share. According to UNCTAD, the sector recorded 60% growth in 2025, with recycling capacity rising significantly. Backed by the Ship Recycling Act, 2019, Hong Kong Convention compliance, green recycling practices, and infrastructure upgrades, Alang has emerged as a preferred destination for international ships. The industry generates thousands of jobs, supports local businesses, and promotes a strong recycling ecosystem by giving new life to recovered materials. With 115 operational yards, Alang continues to strengthen India's circular economy and contribute to sustainable development and the vision of Viksit Bharat.
