Gujarat’s Gobardhan Initiative: Turning Waste into Sustainable Energy

Gandhinagar, Gujarat In Mahudi village of Gandhinagar district, Gujarat, cattle waste is being put to productive use under the Gobardhan Yojana of Swachh Bharat Mission-Gramin. Families are using biogas plants to convert cattle dung into clean cooking fuel, while the bio-slurry generated is used as organic manure, promoting sustainable rural practices. A two-cubic-meter biogas plant costs around ₹42,000, with the beneficiary contributing ₹5,000 and the remaining amount covered through government subsidy. Since 2023-24, more than 14,000 individual biogas plants have been made operational across 88 clusters in Gujarat. Gujarat plans to establish 20,000 more individual biogas plants in 2026-27, with ₹25 crore allocated for the initiative. The programme is strengthening rural sanitation and renewable energy by turning cattle waste into clean fuel and organic manure.
