Gujarat's Mandap Scheme Transforms Vegetable Farming

Jun 29, 2026

The Mandap Scheme in Gujarat's Valsad district is transforming the lives of tribal farmers by promoting modern vine vegetable cultivation. Around 20,000 farmers in Dharampur Taluka are growing crops such as bitter gourd, bottle gourd, ivy gourd, tindora, and parwal on trellis structures, resulting in higher yields and better-quality produce. Government subsidies from the Horticulture Department have reduced cultivation costs and encouraged wider adoption of the scheme. Farmers report stable annual incomes, while vegetables are now reaching larger wholesale markets, including Mumbai. The Mandap system also extends the crop season, ensuring year-round earnings. Besides improving livelihoods, the initiative has generated rural employment and strengthened the local economy, making horticulture a profitable and sustainable option for tribal communities in Gujarat.
