Gujarat’s Rural Women Turn Handicrafts Into Livelihoods

In Gujarat’s Aravalli district, rural women are turning traditional handicrafts into a source of income and self-reliance. In Sarsoli village, ten women formed the Chamunda Sakhi Mandal in 2023 and began making baskets, bags, hats, caps and other products from home. With government training, raw-material support, a ₹30,000 revolving fund and a ₹2.70 lakh loan, the group has expanded production. Under the National Rural Livelihoods Mission, the women sell their products door-to-door and at fairs, allowing them to earn better returns without middlemen. Their participation in local fairs has also helped them gain recognition. With continued support, these women are strengthening their businesses, contributing to family incomes and building greater financial independence through their traditional skills.
