High-tech sludge management system boosts sanitation in Chandrapur
Nov 26, 2025
Significant steps are being taken to strengthen sewage management and sanitation systems in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district. In this direction, CSIR-NEERI, with support from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, has developed a new Mechanical Dewatering and Drying System. After successful trials, this state-of-the-art system has been handed over to the Chandrapur Municipal Corporation. The system scientifically processes fecal sludge collected from septic tanks, rapidly separates the water, and dries the solid material in the drying unit, significantly reducing its volume. This technology can treat around 25 cubic meters or 25,000 litres of fecal sludge every 8 hours, and the entire process uses LPG. This initiative will not only improve fecal sludge management and sanitation in the city but will also make a significant contribution to environmental protection.
