Human rights defender Javed Beigh urges UNHRC probe into rights violations in PoJK, PoGB

New Delhi, India: Human rights defender Javed Beigh, after attending the 63rd UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva, urged the UN body to initiate an independent inquiry into alleged rights violations in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. Beigh alleged restrictions on activists, political workers and journalists, along with detentions and enforced disappearances. He also called for UN fact-finding missions to the regions and urged India to raise the issue through bilateral and multilateral forums. Beigh further criticised Pakistan’s handling of minorities and ethnic communities, while highlighting differences in development and governance between Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and the two regions. His remarks were made in an interview with ANI.
