J&K admin providing free transportation to migratory tribal population in Anantnag

Oct 20, 2023

Anantnag (J&K), Oct 20 (ANI): The Department of Sheep Husbandry has been providing free trucks to the migratory tribal population in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag. This initiative was taken in collaboration with Tribal Affairs Department. This facility was started last year and also continued this year. Instead of their regular movement on foot which would take weeks of marches and halts, the tribal families and their livestock have now been offered a ride free of cost. The Jammu and Kashmir administration has been providing these trucks to the migratory tribal population from various highland pastures in Kashmir valley to the Jammu districts. As winter is around the corner, the nomadic Bakerwal tribe of Jammu and Kashmir has begun to move from the upper reaches to the plains of Jammu. The nomads follow this routine in October in order to avoid the harsh Kashmir winters. These families embark on their journey towards the alpine pastures for grazing during the summer before returning to warmer districts of the Jammu region in October as the temperature goes down.
