Literacy drive in Gujarat’s Mahisagar brings hundreds into the fold of education

Jun 30, 2026

Gujarat’s Mahisagar district is transforming lives through the ULLAS Nav Bharat Literacy Programme, aimed at improving adult literacy. Nearly 4,700 non-literate adults were identified through a survey and taught by 532 student volunteers under the guidance of 126 teachers and Shiksha Mitras. Night classes enabled working adults to attend lessons conveniently. In the final assessment, 4,135 of 4,561 learners successfully passed and will receive literacy certificates. Beneficiaries say they can now read signboards, complete official paperwork, manage bank transactions, and sign documents independently. Officials have announced continued support for successful learners, while those requiring additional assistance will be retrained in Phase II. The programme will also be expanded to other villages across Mahisagar, moving the district closer to achieving complete adult literacy.
