Nepal Speaker Directs PM Balendra Shah to Appear in Parliament, Answer Lawmakers

Aug 18, 2026

Nepal’s House Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal has directed Prime Minister Balendra Shah to appear before Parliament and answer lawmakers’ questions, ending a 77-day opposition protest that had disrupted House proceedings. During Monday’s House of Representatives meeting, Speaker Aryal asked Shah to respond to questions on matters concerning the Prime Minister and areas under his jurisdiction, in accordance with parliamentary rules. The opposition had accused Shah of repeatedly skipping Parliament and avoiding lawmakers’ questions. Opposition parties had also demanded clarification or withdrawal of Shah’s May 31 remark that Nepal had encroached on Indian territory. Following the Speaker’s directive, opposition parties ended their obstruction of the House proceedings. Lawmakers also demanded the regular monthly question-and-answer session as required under parliamentary rules.
