Nepal’s Flood Dead: Mass burials begin for unidentified victims as families search for loved ones

Chitwan District (Nepal), August 31, 2026(ANI): Nepal's scenic Chitwan district has begun mass burials for hundreds of unidentified victims swept away by devastating floods and torrents. Nearly 200 km from Rasuwa, authorities have dug hundreds of graves in Chitwan’s Devghat forest for unidentified flood victims. Chitwan’s once-popular forest trails now serve as a temporary burial ground for badly decomposed bodies that cannot be identified. Authorities buried 96 unidentified bodies Aug 29 & planned over 100 more Sunday, as teams continued recovering victims from rivers and debris. Flash floods triggered by glacial collapse killed about 750 people and left over 3,000 missing along Nepal’s China border. Around 100 rescuers, police and officials documented remains, assisted relatives with identification and prepared unidentified bodies for burial. Nepali authorities collected DNA samples from unidentified victims, enabling remains to be located and exhumed later if identities are confirmed. India sent a forensic team to help Nepal analysis DNA samples, while Nepal is also coordinating with Chinese experts.
