Pithora Painting Gets GI tag, set to empower Gujarat’s tribal artists

Gujarat's traditional Pithora wall painting, practiced for centuries by the Rathwa tribal community in Chhota Udepur, continues to gain recognition through its Geographical Indication (GI) Tag. The recognition preserves the art's authenticity, protects its cultural heritage, and creates new opportunities for tribal artisans. Created by traditional Lakharas using natural colours from leaves, flowers, minerals and mahua, Pithora paintings reflect the community's spiritual beliefs, nature and way of life. Artists say the art preserves their identity and traditions for future generations. The GI Tag is also helping expand market access, strengthen handicrafts, encourage cultural tourism and support sustainable livelihoods. It reflects Gujarat's continued commitment to preserving its rich tribal heritage while empowering local artisan communities.
