Schools reopen in violence-hit Manipur, but attendance remains low
Jul 07, 2023
Imphal (Manipur) July 07, (ANI): After more than two months since the violence erupted in Manipur on May 03, schools from classes 1 to 8 reopened on July 05, but only one-fifth of students were in attendance on average in parts of Imphal. The low attendance rate is believed to be due to violence-related issues, transportation and fear among parents and children. Also, many of the tribal students have also taken a Transfer Certificate (T.C.) from schools and got admitted at the schools located in their respective districts. The number of students seeking T.C. has been increasing. Ethnic violence erupted in Churachandpur after tribal Kuki groups called for protests. The protest was against a proposal for granting ST status to the majority Meitei community. At least 118 people died and nearly 40,000 displaced so far in the violence-hit Manipur.
