Vadodara's Public Library Cooperative Stands as a Model for Community Learning
Aug 10, 2026
Vadodara, Gujarat, is home to a century-old library cooperative that continues to strengthen the culture of reading. Established in 1924, the Gujarat Pustakalay Sahayak Sahakari Mandal connects more than 1,400 libraries across Gujarat and promotes community learning through shared resources, publications and affordable books. Inspired by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad’s library initiatives, pioneer Motibhai Amin developed a cooperative model for knowledge sharing. The movement continues to benefit readers across generations, helping children develop vocabulary, creativity and critical thinking. Even in the digital age, Vadodara’s unique library network remains a strong example of community participation and the enduring value of books.
