Water Revolution Reaches Remote Villages in Gujarat’s Dang
May 16, 2026
For years, Uma Ben’s mornings began with a long walk for water. Like many women in Sakarpatal village in Gujarat’s Dang district, she carried pots through hilly forest paths every day. But today, clean drinking water flows directly to their homes through pipeline networks under the Gujarat government’s mission of Nal Se Jal and the Centre’s “Har Ghar Jal” initiative. Tap water connections have reduced hardships for tribal families, especially women. Despite the hilly terrain, pipelines and lift irrigation systems now ensure regular supply to remote villages, with local communities also helping maintain the system. Gujarat is one of India's top-performing states under the ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’, having achieved 100% rural household tap water coverage, according to government data. From walking kilometres for water to getting water at their doorstep, life has changed in Gujarat’s tribal villages. The initiative has brought convenience, saved time and improved the quality of daily life.
