Gilgit Baltistan: Protests break out against ‘exploitative’ tax legislation

Gilgit, Gilgit Baltistan, 11 October, 2022: - Shopkeepers across the illegally occupied territory of Gilgit Baltistan observed a shutter down strike in the region against what they call imposition of unjust taxes on them. Locals accuse the Gilgit Baltistan Revenue Authority Bill, which has been reintroduced after being pulled in once August following massive demonstration, will levy or increase taxes on as many as 135 commodities. Locals criticised the region’s lawmakers for passing the bill and claimed that they have passed the bill for their own salaries and privileges.
