Patna (Bihar) [India], July 16 : JD(U) leader Rajeev Ranjan on Thursday addressed recent high-profile criminal cases in Bihar, asserting that the state government and police are taking stringent action against all those involved in the recent spate of violence.
Ranjan highlighted the arrests made in the Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI) officer murder case and the action taken against suspects in the murder of activist Bunty Yadav.
Speaking to ANI about the MVI officer case, in which a railway employee was allegedly murdered as part of a conspiracy disguised as a robbery, Ranjan said such an incident was unprecedented for Bihar and stressed that the police were treating the matter with seriousness.
He said, "Undoubtedly, such incidents have not happened in Bihar before. And some incidents happened in different parts of the country, but for Bihar, this incident is undoubtedly a shocking one. Bihar Police has taken the whole matter very seriously, and MVI, who plotted with her lover."
Emphasising the action taken in the case, the JD(U) leader said the accused, including the wife of the victim, the alleged shooter and her lover, had been arrested and that further action would follow if additional facts emerged during the investigation.
"Savita Kumari, her shooter, and her lover, everyone has been arrested; the investigation is going on, and if any other fact related to this comes to light, other arrests and other actions can be taken accordingly," he said.
JDU leader further addressed the recent murder of activist Bunty Yadav, confirming that the Patna Police have taken firm action against both the primary suspect and the officers responsible for lapses in duty.
"Look, this was a brutal murder, and the police have also somewhere prima facie accepted the lapse, and that is why disciplinary action was also taken against four officers and employees. Now the main accused for whom Patna Police was looking had to fire in self-defense and the criminal has been killed," he said.
Reiterating the government's stand against crime, he said, "All the facts are being investigated, and whoever is connected to this, no one will be spared."
Meanwhile, Bihar Police arrested three persons, including the wife of a railway employee and her alleged lover, for allegedly conspiring to murder him through a contract killer after he was shot aboard the Jansadharan Express near Badlaghat in the Katihar Rail District last month.
"Ajit Kumar confessed that Devkumar Gunjan was an obstacle in the romantic relationship between him and Samita. Acting on a premeditated conspiracy, Ajit and Samita hired Dheeraj, a contract killer, to shoot Devkumar Gunjan while he was on the train. The victim subsequently passed away during treatment," Police said.
According to a release issued by the Office of the Superintendent of Police (SP), Rail, Katihar, Devkumar Gunjan, an electricity department employee posted in Jamui, was travelling to meet his wife, Samita Kumari, a Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI) posted in Supaul, when he was attacked on the train.
Following the incident, the Katihar SP, Rail, constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the leadership of the Barauni Rail Sub-Divisional Police Officer to investigate the case. The probe was continuously monitored by senior officials.
On the other hand, on Thursday, amidst the ongoing political heat in Bihar over the abduction and murder of 25-year-old Bunty Yadav, the Patna Police shot and injured the main accused, Ravish alias Basiya, in an encounter.
The case, which spans a chilling timeline of kidnapping, torture, and a subsequent police encounter, has exposed deep vulnerabilities in local law enforcement.
According to the police, the incident began on July 6 when Bunty Yadav was allegedly abducted from the busy Karbigahiya/Patna Junction area.
Although Yadav's family informed the authorities, they alleged that prompt action was not taken during the initial hours following the abduction.
Five days after the abduction, the investigation took a grim turn when Yadav's body was recovered from the Athmalgola region. The body bore marks of severe physical trauma. Initial post-mortem reports and preliminary investigations revealed a disturbing level of violence. Yadav was subjected to brutal physical torture before his death.
Reports indicated that a corrosive substance, suspected to be acid, was used on the victim. The perpetrators allegedly attempted to deface the body to erase the victim's identity before dumping it.
In response to the mounting criticism, the Patna Police administration maintains that the case has been successfully resolved. Officials emphasised that the murder was the byproduct of a personal, financially motivated criminal dispute rather than a politically connected crime. Authorities added that active raids are still underway to track down and arrest the remaining suspects linked to the murder plot.
