"Keep an eye on non-NDA vote; it carries message": RJD MP Manoj Jha on Bihar's 8 MLC seat results
Oct 30, 2026
Patna (Bihar) [India], October 30 : Following the declaration of results for the biennial Bihar Legislative Council (MLC) elections across eight constituencies (comprising four graduates' and four teachers' seats), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Manoj Jha on Friday asserted that the electoral outcome reflects an overwhelming undercurrent against the ruling coalition.
Speaking to ANI, Jha emphasised that the consolidation of the non-BJP and non-JD(U) vote carries major implications for both state and national politics, while analysing the performance of non-NDA forces, including the RJD's significant gains, the emergence of Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj Party, and victorious independent candidates.
Jha pointed out that the opposition has successfully rebuilt its grassroots presence where it was previously marginalised.
"The important point, if we set aside the prevailing meta-narrative for a moment, is that the non-BJP, non-JD(U) vote is overwhelming. Whether it is our own victories, those of Jan Suraaj, or the success of independent candidates, if you analyse this from an electoral perspective, specifically by looking at the non-NDA vote, it sends a clear message to both the Bihar govt and the central govt..." Jha stated.
Highlighting the RJD's specific electoral trajectory across the 8 contested legislative council seats, Jha added, "As for us, we have moved from being virtually absent in previous elections to establishing a strong presence this time around. We won in two constituencies and mounted a robust challenge in several others. But I reiterate: keep an eye on the non-NDA vote; it carries a message that is resonating across the country."
The recent biennial MLC elections covered 8 key graduated and teachers constituencies in Bihar. The RJD scored significant victories, notably with Dr. Sanjeev Kumar defeating veteran BJP leader and sitting MLC Nawal Kishore Yadav in the high-profile Patna Teachers' constituency by over 1,057 votes.
The Jan Suraaj Party made its electoral presence felt as candidate Suresh Prasad Rai secured the Darbhanga Teachers' seat, defeating Congress candidate and sitting MLC Dr. Madan Mohan Jha.
Independent candidate Rahul Raj emerged victorious in the Saran Teachers' constituency after defeating opposing party-backed nominees, while the BJP and JD(U) secured victories and strong leads in remaining seats like Darbhanga Graduates and Patna Graduates.
On Thursday, newly elected Janata Dal (United) Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) Neeraj Kumar called on the party’s national working President Sanjay Jha and Bihar State president Umesh Kushwaha in the state capital, following his recent triumph.
During the courtesy meeting, Kumar expressed his gratitude to the party's top brass and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for placing their trust in him, attributing his victory to the hard work of party workers and the people's faith in the state government's governance model.
Both Sanjay Jha and Umesh Kushwaha congratulated Kumar on his electoral success, felicitating him and commending his dedication to the party organisation. The senior leaders expressed confidence that his presence in the Upper House would further amplify the party’s voice on public issues and development policies.
