New Delhi [India], July 14 : Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) chief Viako met the Congress leadership at the residence of Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi at 10, Janpath, and expressed support towards the Congress-led INDIA bloc in the Centre ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
MDMK, which broke its long-standing alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and joined hands with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) camp in post-poll politics in Tamil Nadu.
Following the meeting with the Congress leadership in Delhi, Vaiko told ANI, "It was just a courtesy call. I am with the Congress, MDMK is with the Congress alliance."
When asked about MDMK's stand on the three language policy, he said, "We always opposed the three language formula from the beginning. We will never accept it."
Following the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, in which the Vijay-led TVK emerged as the largest party, MDMK was among the parties, including Congress, which quit the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance and joined hands with Vijay.
Since then, Vaiko has maintained that he would stand as a "shield" to protect Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay from political attacks by the opposition while accusing the DMK of targeting him for supporting the ruling TVK government.
The MDMK has one Lok Sabha MP in Durai Vaiko.
The Monsoon Session of the Parliament, beginning on July 20, will be the first one after Congress left the DMK. The DMK had also skipped the INDIA bloc meeting last month.
Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thol Thirumavalavan, despite having party MLA Vanni Arasu in the Vijay-led cabinet, had said that the party would continue its friendship with the DMK.
Thirumavalavan had called for all regional parties, including TVK and DMK, in Tamil Nadu to join hands against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
