New Delhi [India], October 8 : Several Delhi police personnel have come forward to narrate incidents of being subject to alleged physical assault whil attempting to ensure law and order and enforce Section 163 restrictions during the Congress led protests against the CEC on Wednesday.
According to Constable Devender Sandhu, police personnel were calmly advising a gathering to disperse and step into police buses due to the restriction orders in the area. But, the party cadred broke their nameplates, snatched their caps and physically pushed and pulled the officials down.
"We were peacefully explaining to them, under protection, that the curfew of 163 is in effect here, Please leave. So we told them, but they didn't listen. So we were politely asking them to just sit in the bus. We were handling them calmly. Almost all of us were in proper uniform. They broke our nameplates first, then they snatched the caps off our heads and threw them away. Then they pulled us from behind and pushed us down," he said.
Sandhu added that the protestors left him seriously injured on the waist and back of his head even though the police were detaining the protestors peacefully.
"I was hurt quite a bit; I also got a deep injury on my waist and here on the back of my head. We didn't hit anyone there; we didn't do anything to anyone. We were just detaining them peacefully. We didn't do anything wrong, but they started it out of nowhere. That is a very wrong thing to do," he said.
Head Constable Bhupender Ahlawat said that despite Police personnel trying to help some of the protestors they were subject to physical assault
"You can see in the video that we didn't physically touch any ladies or beat anyone up. Even in the pushing and shoving, if someone falls. They were forcefully pushing us down, and on top of that, they were kicking us. If someone falls in the pushing and shoving, you should help them, right? If any protester falls, or someone drops their phone, or someone's camera falls, or their mobile drops, we pick it up and say, Here, take it, be careful," he said
A female Constable who was also allegedly assaulted during the protests echoed similar sentiments, saying that it felt very wrong as she was only performing her duty.
Meanwhile, another Delhi Police constable, Ankit Kasana, alleged that he was attacked and bitten by demonstrators during an opposition protest yesterday.
Adressing the media, constable Kasana alleged that some Congress supporters blocked the way and would lie down in front of the car.
“Yesterday around 6:30, when we were at our duty points, there was a detention going on there. We suddenly found out that Rahul sir had been detained. As soon as we had to get his car out safely, these people weren't letting us through; sometimes they would lie down in front of the car, and sometimes they would stop the car and push it. As we were trying to turn the car, a private vehicle blocked the way. We saw that there were some Congress supporters,” Kasana told ANI.
Kasana further added that about 30 to 35 people, both men and women, surrounded him while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was being detained. He alleged that the group abused him, tore his uniform, scratched him with their fingernails and bit him.
He said, “Some leaders tried to hijack that car, forcefully trying to snatch the keys. At the same time, I reached there and moved those people away. During this, an Inspector took the car into his custody and started backing it up so we could safely move Rahul Gandhi from there. As soon as they saw that I was alone and sir was inside, someone grabbed my collar from behind, tore my uniform, and broke my button too.”
After the incident, Kasana was taken to Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital in Delhi for a medical checkup.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police have registered three FIRs in connection with the Opposition's Wednesday protest, with more cases being registered in the matter, Delhi Police said on Thursday.
The cases have been registered under various sections related to alleged assault on police personnel, obstruction of government work, pushing and manhandling, and misbehaviour with police personnel.
