"Build 20 lakh houses first, then ask for votes": BRS president KTR challenges T'gana Minister Ponguleti

Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], May 28 : BRS Working President KT Rama Rao (KTR) launched a sharp attack on Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy over his recent remarks on housing construction in Hyderabad and challenged the Congress government to fulfil its promise of constructing 20 lakh Indiramma houses before seeking votes from the people.
Recalling the Minister's earlier statement that the Congress would seek votes only after providing 20 lakh Indiramma houses, KTR questioned whether the Minister has the courage and commitment to stand by his own words. He said making loud challenges and later escaping responsibility has become a habit for unethical Congress leaders.
KTR asserted that mere promises and dramatic declarations are not enough, and demanded that the Congress government prove its sincerity through action. He challenged the ruling party to publicly pledge that it would implement every single promise made in its election manifesto if it truly possesses commitment and credibility, as per the release.
"Do not make hollow oaths. If you have the capability, fulfil your promises and show results to the people," KTR said.
He reminded that the BRS government had built houses with dignity and self-respect for the poor and transformed the dream of home ownership into reality for lakhs of families. He stated that while Congress speaks about tiny "box houses," the BRS government constructed quality double-bedroom homes that became a model for the country.
KTR highlighted that BRS constructed nearly one lakh double-bedroom houses in Hyderabad alone and said each house built by the previous BRS government was equivalent in quality and scale to seven so-called Indiramma houses proposed by the Congress.
"Our party built houses of dignity and pride. We did not construct matchbox houses with poor standards. We built spacious and respectable homes for the poor and created a model admired across the country," he stated.
Throwing an open challenge to the Congress government, KTR said if the government truly has sincerity and administrative capability, it should build even better double-bedroom housing projects in Hyderabad instead of merely making allegations against the previous government.
KTR strongly criticised the Congress government for demolishing houses in the name of governance while failing to construct new housing for the poor.
"We built houses brick by brick, while you are running bulldozers over the homes of ordinary people. You are deriving pleasure by demolishing people's homes every weekend, and yet you speak about housing with arrogance," he remarked.
He demanded that the government release a White Paper detailing: the number of houses constructed in Hyderabad in the last two-and-a-half years, and the number of houses demolished during the same period.
Launching a personal and political counterattack, KTR said BRS believes in protecting Telangana's self-respect and living with dignity, unlike leaders who surrender before Delhi for political survival.
"We only know how to uphold Telangana's self-respect. We do not know how to fall at the feet of Delhi leaders in luxury hotels to escape cases," he said.
KTR further alleged that the Congress leadership was indulging in corruption, land-related blackmail, misuse of the revenue system, and coercive tactics against common people. He accused certain leaders of facilitating large contracts for family-linked companies, operating illegal crushers, and exploiting government systems for personal gain.
He also criticised what he described as arrogance and disrespect shown towards leaders from weaker and backward sections of society.
KTR made it clear that the BRS party would continue exposing what he called the Congress government's "420 election promises fraud" and would not allow the government to escape accountability through diversion politics and publicity stunts.
"We will not stop questioning the betrayal of six guarantees and thirteen declarations promised to the people of Telangana. No diversion drama can silence the voice of the people," he asserted.
