New Delhi [India], July 28 : The Opposition on Tuesday showed willingness to participate in the discussion on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 in the Lok Sabha, while pressing the government to respond to allegations of police action against students protesting over examination irregularities.
According to sources, the Opposition is not opposed to either the Bill or a discussion on measures to curb paper leaks, but wants the Centre to address concerns over the alleged use of pellet guns and excessive force against student protesters.
"We are neither against the paper leak Bill nor against a discussion on it. We fully support any move to strengthen examinations, but we need an answer on pellet guns and excessive use of force against protesting students," sources said, adding that the Opposition has signalled its willingness to proceed with the debate if the government responds to the issue.
Congress is expected to field its senior leadership during the debate in the Lok Sabha. According to sources, Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal, Gaurav Gogoi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are among the party leaders likely to participate in the discussion on the legislation.
While the Lower House is expected to take up the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 for consideration and passing, the Rajya Sabha is likely to witness renewed Opposition demands for a discussion on the alleged police action against student protesters when the House assembles at 11 am, sources said.
As per the Rajya Sabha List of Business, Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi is scheduled to introduce the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (Amendment) Bill, 2026, while Union Home Minister Amit Shah will move the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026 for passage.
The developments come after the NDA Parliamentary Party's weekly 'Mangal Milan' meeting concluded on Tuesday morning in Parliament. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and other NDA leaders attended the meeting. For the first time, MPs of the newly formed Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) also participated in the alliance meeting.
Parliament has witnessed repeated disruptions during the Monsoon Session, with the Opposition demanding a discussion on the alleged police action against students protesting over examination irregularities, while the government has urged all parties to participate in the debate on the Public Examinations Amendment Bill.
