"Texas is not for sale": James Talarico says Texas Senate win sends message to Elon Musk

Washington [US], November 5 : Democratic victor James Talarico declared on Wednesday that his high-profile senatorial triumph over Republican contender Ken Paxton in Texas conveyed an unmistakable rebuke to tech billionaire Elon Musk, who poured vast financial resources into backing Paxton's electoral campaign, asserting emphatically that "Texas is not for sale".
Speaking to "CBS Mornings" just hours after his projected electoral victory, Talarico framed the outcome as a definitive opening to eradicate excessive corporate financing from the democratic process "for good".
"The people of Texas delivered a crystal-clear message to the world's first trillionaire: Texas is not for sale," Talarico stated. "The power in this state, in this country, belongs to the people, and we've got to make sure it stays that way."
The newly elected senator emphasised that his defeat of Paxton serves as a foundational mandate to reform campaign finance regulations and "clean up government" to curb the disproportionate political leverage wielded by prominent megadonors.
According to reporting published by CBS News, financial disclosures indicate that the high-profile entrepreneur injected substantial capital into the electoral cycle, contributing upwards of 158 million USD in September to the principal super political action committee supporting Republican Senate candidates. That organisation, the Senate Leadership Fund PAC, subsequently channelled funds into Texas PAC, the external political vehicle championing Paxton's bid.
Additionally, CBS News noted that Musk's private trust allocated 10 million USD to the Lone Star Liberty PAC, an independent expenditure group established to bolster Paxton's senatorial ambitions.
When questioned regarding the rationale behind such heavy financial investment aimed at halting his campaign, Talarico contended that the tech magnate desired a malleable legislative ally.
"He wanted his very own personal senator," the Democrat claimed. "He wanted a senator who was going to do his bidding, who was going to sell off Texas land to his data centres, who was going to give our Texas water, who was going to give our taxpayer dollars."
"And I think he knows that I have a history of standing up to billionaires in state government. I have a history of tackling corruption and cleaning up government, and that's exactly what we're going to do in the US Senate, and I think that's what the people of Texas expect me to do on their behalf," he added.
Reflecting on broader electoral dynamics across the upper chamber, Talarico described the outcome as a sweeping endorsement of progressive governance.
"We saw a win the size of Texas, and that means we have a mandate the size of Texas," he remarked.
With his political party securing command of the legislative chamber, Talarico asserted an imperative to implement inclusive economic measures, establish universal healthcare frameworks and expand public educational investments.
"Those are some of the big goals that we have to accomplish on a bipartisan basis, working with both parties to deliver for people in our state," he explained.
Furthermore, the victor argued that the race's ultimate result demonstrates voter exhaustion with artificial polarisation propagated by powerful technology executives through digital platforms.
"They continually pit us against each other," Talarico observed. "They divide us by party, by race, by gender, by religion, by culture, so we don't notice that they're picking our pockets, that they are closing our public schools, that they're gutting our healthcare, that they're raising taxes on all of us while they cut taxes for themselves."
