May 28, 2026

Khodang (Manipur) [India], May 28 : In a landmark development for displaced communities, Khodang, a Kuki-Zo village situated in the buffer zone bordering Churachandpur, Kakching, and Bishnupur districts, officially welcomed its residents back on Thursday.
This marks the first instance of a Kuki-Zo village being resettled following the widespread displacement that began on May 3, 2023.
The momentous return was inaugurated by Saikot MLA Paolenlal, who cut the ribbon at a commemorative stone, followed by a dedication prayer led by Pastor Zalal of the GTPA.
The village had been deserted since May 28, 2023, after residents were forced to flee following an alleged attack by the armed Meitei group, Arambai Tenggol. According to locals, the aftermath of the violence was devastating, with the majority of the village's 40-plus households torched; only about eight houses were spared. For three years, the village remained abandoned.
Speaking on the successful return, village chief Jamminlien Haokip expressed immense relief and gratitude. "I am very happy that we could resettle starting today. This was made possible through the concerted efforts of MLA Paolenlal, the district administration, the concerned SDO, civil society organisation leaders, and the village authority," Haokip said. "Now, we will be able to pursue our normal livelihood activities once again."
Efforts to rehabilitate the village are already well underway. According to the village chief, approximately 40 houses have been reconstructed, with an additional 10 units planned for completion under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) scheme.
The formal inauguration was attended by a wide array of stakeholders, including Kuki civil society organisation leaders, student representatives, local women leaders, members of various chiefs' associations, and security forces, signalling a collective effort toward normalisation in the region.
