Nagpur (Maharashtra) [India], September 9 : Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut on Wednesday welcomed the FIR registered by Nainital Police in connection with the ‘purification’ of Haldwani’s Ramlila Maidan after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s rally.
Speaking to reporters in Nagpur, Raut stated, "This is a good thing. I had heard that these people were making Rahul Gandhi the accused. If, with whatever pressure the public has built, an FIR has been registered against whoever has done this work of social disruption, then it is good."
The FIR was registered at Haldwani Kotwali on a complaint by Congress worker Anju under Sections 196 and 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 3(1)(R) of the SC/ST Act.
Nainital SSP Manjunath TC told ANI that police had received 80 complaints and petitions from across Uttarakhand, including 19 from Nainital district, seeking registration of an FIR in the matter.
The Vidhana Soudha Police in Bengaluru had also registered a zero FIR in the case.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, several Congress MPs, including Mallu Ravi and Vamsi Krishna Gaddam, reached Parliament Street Police Station to demand registration of an FIR.
The MPs alleged that the incident was an attack on the Dalit community and said they would seek action against those responsible. They also demanded a Zero FIR and announced plans for a protest at Jantar Mantar.
Congress MP Karamvir Singh Boudh said, “20 Members of Parliament arrived and had to sit there for three hours just to get a Zero FIR registered. The police inspector involved seemed unable to even sit comfortably in his chair; he kept saying that it doesn't fall under the rules or that he would examine the matter and consult his superiors. I want to ask: you are the officer-in-charge of this police station; you do not need anyone's permission to register an FIR. Eventually, the FIR was processed, and the application we had submitted was attached to the case file. Now, our battle will continue on the streets.”
“We demanded that FIRs also be registered against those responsible for filing the FIR against Rahul Gandhi in Uttarakhand. We decided to file counter-FIRs against the very people who had initiated the FIRs against Rahul Gandhi,” Congress MP Balram Naik said.
